How does the process work?

Okay, so you’re ready to buy a car. What do you need to do to make sure you’re getting the car that’s right for you, and the best deal? Here’s an overview of the process to get you started.
  1. Determine what you can afford

You can determine what you can afford by taking your take home pay (after taxes) and accounting for all the other bills you have each month – rent, mortgage, cable, cell phone, internet, gas, electricity, medical bills, food, entertainment, etc. The amount you have left over will help you decide what you have left each month for an auto loan. Make sure you consider the cost of gas, too!

  2. Do your homework

Is new or used right for you? What is your trade-in worth? Do you want to lease or buy? These are all questions that you should answer before you step foot in a showroom. Check out our articles & tips for details.

  3. Find a vehicle

The internet is a great resource to search inventories online and find the right car at the right price. Most dealers have their inventories on their websites. Or, go to the manufacturer’s site and find a car.

  4. Find a dealer

Find a dealer in your area. Close to 500 dealerships in Colorado can get you credit union financing, so take your pick and be sure to shop around.

  5. Take a test drive & decide on a vehicle

It’s time to kick those tires! Make sure you test drive the vehicle and inspect it thoroughly, especially if you’re buying a used vehicle.

  6. Negotiate the price

When it comes time to talk about price, remember that the price listed on the sticker is not necessarily the price you will pay. Talk with the sales manager to negotiate the price of the car. If you have documentation from www.nada.com or from the manufacturer’s website that may help with the negotiation process.

  7. Negotiate the financing

Do you know your credit score? It’s easy to get a free credit report online. When you know your score you can negotiate financing. Or, get pre-approved now and get it all taken care of.

  8. Get auto insurance

Ah, shopping for auto insurance. Don’t worry, CU Direct Connect Insurance will do the shopping for you and get you the best coverage for your individual needs! Contact CU Direct Connect Insurance at 720.974.1360.

  9. Get other products, like auto theft protection

You’ve made a big purchase – now you should look at protecting it. Products like LoJack can help protect your new car from theft.

  10. Drive!

This is the fun part. You did the work, now you get to enjoy. Get behind the wheel and have fun with your new car! (This is where people usually tell you to be responsible, but you know that, right?) Go enjoy that new set of wheels!
